Pilates

Eastern Sports & Spinal Care offer individualised Pilates classes in Norwood for injury rehabilitation and general fitness. We take into account your current level of muscle control and general body condition in an initial consultation and tailor your class exercises to suit you. Our classes are run by a qualified physio and have a maximum capacity of 6 to ensure you receive adequate supervision.

The Pilates approach integrates specific spinal stabilization into various exercises, which increase in complexity as you progress through different class levels. We offer programmes for teenagers during school term time and adults throughout the year with both mat classes and equipment classes, all supervised by Physiotherapists trained in this method.

NOTE:
- A qualified physiotherapist supervises all classes
- Maximum class capacity is 6 people, ensuring that you receive suitable supervision
- An initial 1-on-1 session is required with a physiotherapist before you can participate in any Pilates class

Foundation Floor
Beginners
Foundation floor is a Pilates floor class designed for beginners. Completed on mats, it consolidates the concepts of spinal stabilisation that you will have learned in your individual sessions and teaches you how to stabilise your spine effectively in varied positions while exercising your limbs. Exercises will be progressed as you gain more control and you will strengthen your core muscles to stabilise your spine more effectively during daily activities, taking greater stress off your back and relieving pain at the same time.

Mindful Movement
Beginners - Intermediate
Mindful Movement is a class which sits between the Foundation Floor and Controlled Floor classes. It is appropriate for people/clients who have mastered the principles and the Foundation Floor class but for what-ever reason are reticent about progressing to either the Equipment or Controlled Floor classes.
The class moves beyond establishing control in a neutral spinal posture to gently and safely exploring spinal movement. The aim of the class is to continue to pursue core muscle control within new parameters.
The class is 45 minutes duration and clients must be referred by an Eastern Sports and Spinal Care physiotherapist or progress from the Foundation Floor class as appropriate.

Controlled Floor
Intermediate
Those who have successfully participated in the Foundation Floor and wish to continue with mat based exercise exercises can progress to the Controlled class. Controlled floor is also conducted on mats and incorporates the same spinal stabilisation techniques, however more complex and difficult exercises are incorporated which target the previously developed areas as well as working muscles in your trunk, arms and legs, providing a greater challenge for those with adequate spinal control.

Progressive Floor
Advanced
Progressive floor is the most advanced form of Pilates matwork offered at Eastern Sports and Spinal Care. It is designed to satisfy those who desire a more intense form of Pilates and introduces more complex exercises to improve strength and endurance and incorporates the use of exercise balls to further enhance the development of your core stability.

Equipment
The Pilates equipment classes are conducted in groups of up to six people in our well equipped Pilates Studio working on specialised equipment with a program tailored to their individual needs. Clients with appropriate spinal control who are keen to join this class will be assessed by our physiotherapists to determine their specific goals and any limitations before being taught specific exercises on the equipment. Their physiotherapist regularly reviews their program.
